Groundhog day, the political angle of 2006

Tradition states that one must observe a groundhog 's burrow on this day. If the groundhog emerges and fails to see its shadow because the weather is cloudy, winter winter will soon end; however, if the groundhog sees its shadow because the weather is bright and clear, it will be frightened and run back into its hole, and the winter will continue for six more weeks.

President Bush in an attempt to avoid having his state of the Union speech become an a balloon of hot air and empty promises, just like every other President's state of the Union speech, made a deliberate choice to avoid giving his Speech on Feb. 2nd. this year. Sages, doom sayers, three wise men and the president's foes could truthfully claim, if the President saw his shadow we would have six weeks of a good political climate. If the president doesn't see his shadow, his would have 6 weeks more of gloom, doom and political despair. Scientists have a released a new study and compared the actual results over two hundred years and they found that Ground Hog Day predictions follow close to tradition but the period of negative or positive effect according to the ground hog seeing his shadow is much longer than the six weeks of folk lore. This period lasts at least a full year or longer.

Research and analysis confirm this data, that the "Ground Hog's Day Affect" starts with the State of the Union Speech by the president no matter what day he chooses to give the speech. Feb. 2, just happens to be the day we picked to make the observation, thus it is like Christmas and Easter, traditional days of observing significant religious holidays but no one knows for sure when the actual date and year these events happened.

This wouldn't be so bad, but technology has upset the apple cart with the President's State of the Union Speech. Every President is so media conscious that they have a whole team of advisors working to keep the president from being shown in a bad light. Thus all lights including the sun is pointed at the president. Therefore the president could not see his shadow if he tried. Thus we will have another bad year no matter what the President says in this years "State of the Union" speech. Just look at the last six years, after technology took over. The USA hasn't had a good year. Just look how much corruption was found last year, Hurricane Quatrain and others, Tom DeLay, Jack Abramoff, the Iraqi war bogging down into a slog, and more. Prior years were loss of jobs, 911, Osama bin Ladden, ENRON,, Abu Grhaib torture scandal, Afghanistan, attempts to impeach Bill Clinton, the Gore-Bush election recount and the list keeps on growing just like the Energizer Bunny keeps on ticking.

I suggest we have the president give his speech in the dark so we won't have to watch his supporters clap and give praise when we know the opposite will happen. Or we could go back to the old days and let a ground hog live on the White House lawn and let the president give his speech when the ground hog comes out to see his shadow. The press and media would not be allowed to use any artificial lighting to offset shadows.

This would give us a fifty-fifty chance of having a good year, much better odds than we have now. Please write your Congressmen and push them to make this change to our calendar.
