Michael Smith, Fugitive

38-year fugitive arrested in Okla. (May 20, 2006)

SAN FRANCISCO – A fugitive for nearly 38 years since escaping from a California prison has been arrested in Oklahoma, authorities said.

Michael Smith, who escaped from the Correctional Training Facility in Soledad on June 7, 1968, was arrested, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said.

Smith escaped while serving the third year of a five-year-to-life sentence for robbery.

His case was reopened in 2003 and was tracked to Sapulpa, Okla.

Smith is in Oklahoma awaiting an extradition hearing, officials said.
