Babe Ruth was ailing

In 1948, the great American baseball slugger Babe Ruth was ailing, in and out of hospitals with throat cancer. At the premiere of the movie “The Babe Ruth Story” (starring William Bendix as the Babe), Ruth became so weak that he left the festivities early and was admitted into a nearby hospital.

On Aug. 16, Ruth told a visitor, “Don't come back tomorrow. I won't be here.”

Later that evening, a passing doctor noticed Ruth out of bed and wandering about his room. The doctor asked him where he was going.

Ruth replied: “I'm going over the valley.”

Then he returned to bed, lapsed into a coma and died an hour later. He was 53.
