What is it with Scotts and Cats?

In Kelso, Scotland, locals used to place a cat in a barrel of soot, then hang the barrel between two tall poles.

Men would then ride their horse beneath the barrel, whacking it with clubs and mallets. The object was to smash the barrel without an angry, sooty cat landing on one's head.
