Was it Starbucks or lack of motivation

Would-be robber smells the coffee

Maybe it was the second cup of coffee from the courtesy table, or maybe he just wanted to avoid another argument.

Whatever the reason, a man who tried to rob two Mission Valley banks Thursday left both empty-handed and was almost immediately taken into custody.

The first attempt occurred at Wells Fargo Bank on Fashion Valley Road at 11:30 a.m. The would-be robber presented a demand note to a teller who asked him if he was sure he wanted to rob the bank, San Diego police Detective Gary Hassen said.

The robber argued briefly with the teller, then left. Hassen said the bandit got on the trolley and rode to the next stop, in Hazard Center, about a mile away.

He got off and, wearing sunglasses, entered a First Financial Credit Union branch. Again he presented a demand note that said he was armed with a gun.

He apologized to the bank teller for not removing his glasses, saying his eyes had been dilated, according to a police report of the incident.

As the teller went into a back room, presumably to get money, the man went to the courtesy coffee station, got a cup of coffee and started humming, police reported.

After pouring himself a second cup, he became agitated and left with the coffee cup but without any cash.

Bank security guards alerted police and about noon the man taken into custody outside the bank without incident.

This was reported in the local paper as a FACT, but I do wonder if a reporter was just bing creative...
