How many would you save?

The great geneticist J.B.S. Haldane was once asked whether he would risk death to save a drowning brother. “No,” he replied, “but I would to save two brothers – or eight cousins.”

(Haldane was alluding to how genetic information is passed to future generations. A sibling shares, on average, one-half of one's genome; cousins share one-eighth.)
