Chew your Cud, I mean gum

Scheduled for colon surgery anytime soon? Don't forget to bring some gum.

A small study published recently in The Archives of Surgery reports that people who chewed gum after colon surgery recovered more quickly than those who did not pack some gum.

Doctors say it's important after colon surgery to get a patient's bowels functioning again as soon as possible. Eating would do that, but many patients initially have trouble keeping food down.

Gum-chewing caused no such problems in the study, and chewers were able to leave the hospital after an average stay of 4.3 days, compared to 6.8 days for those who did not chew gum.
