What is the speed of sound

Technically speaking, there is no such thing as “the speed of sound.”

Sound travels at different speeds, depending upon the temperature and medium it is passing through.

Under standard atmospheric conditions, with sea level air temperatures at 32 degrees, sound travels at 742 miles per hour.

At higher altitudes and in hotter temperatures, however, sound moves faster.

Likewise with denser, more compressed media.

Sound travels four times faster through water than through air, and 15 times faster through steel.
