Water Bears

Tardigrades or "water bears" are tiny (about 1 millimeter in length), segmented animals that feed on plants, bacteria, and sometimes other equally small animals.

There are about 750 known species, occuring around the world from the Himalaya Mountains to the equator to the deep sea.

They are extreamly hardy but require moisture to be active.

During periods of dryness, they can suspend thier metabolism, slipping into a state of cryptobiosis that can last for years.
