Halloween superstitions

The origins of Halloween date back 2,000 years to the ancient Celts, who celebrated their new year on Nov. 1.

The Celts, who lived in what is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, believed that on the night before the new year began, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. These are a few of many superstitions about Halloween:

  • If a bat flies into a house, it's a sign that ghosts are nearby.

  • If you hear footsteps behind you on Halloween night, don't look back. It could be a spirit, and if you look, you will soon join the dead.

  • Keeping silent at dinner on Halloween encourages spirits to come to the table.

  • If you ring a bell on Halloween night, it will frighten evil spirits away.

  • If you put your clothes on inside out and walk backwards on Halloween night, you will see a witch in the sky at midnight.

  • If the flame on your candle goes out on Halloween, it means you are in the presence of a ghost.

  • Girls who carry a lamp to a spring of water on Halloween night will see their future husband reflected in the water.
