How long can you hold it?

Urinary retention – the inability to urinate – is not an unusual problem, and it is more common in men than women. Typically, it's caused by a blockage, infection or nerve damage in the urinary tract.

Modern medical treatment ranges from medication to catheters to surgery.

One thousand or so years ago, however, Avicenna of Persia (who wrote one of antiquity's most influential medical textbooks) proposed what can only be described as a particularly lousy idea.

Avicenna's remedy: Put some thirsty lice in the urinary tract.
