Straighten up and Fly Right Like A Fly

Straighten up and fly right this summer Before you board, some tips to ponder

Alison Freehling

An airplane ride can be your ticket to paradise – but getting there often isn't pretty. The cramped quarters, dry air and changes in air pressure leave many travelers tired, stiff, dehydrated and altogether grouchy.

Before you fly this summer with only Tylenol and earplugs on your side, check out these tips from travel agents:

  • Drink lots of water. Start chugging several hours before a flight to keep your skin, throat, eyes and nose from drying out.

  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine and salty foods (yes, that includes the in-flight peanuts). All can increase dehydration. Good snacks to pack: dried fruits, unsalted nuts, protein bars and fresh fruit.

  • Bring saline. Use over-the-counter saline eye drops and nasal sprays as needed for comfort.

  • Protect your ears. Ask for a seat away from the engines – the noise can cause headaches – and chew gum or pinch your nostrils during takeoff and landing to avoid inner ear pain.

  • Get up at least once an hour to walk or stretch. Sitting still for too long raises the risk of dangerous blood clots in the legs. While seated, keep your legs uncrossed, shift positions frequently and flex or tap your feet.

  • Wear loose-fitting clothes. Also consider bringing slippers to ease swelling in the feet.

  • Make sure it's safe to fly. If you've had surgery or have a chronic health problem, always check with your doctor first.

  • If you take medicine, pack twice as much as you think you'll need. Put half in your carry-on bag in case other luggage gets lost or delayed (but note: ask your doctor if cold temperatures in the cargo hold might damage medicine).

  • Sanitize. Planes can be full of germs, so wash your hands before eating, and pack disinfectant wipes to clean trays.
