Anesthesia and Depersonalization disorder

  • The Massachusetts Historical Society once decided to commission a monument to commemorate the discovery of anesthesia. However, agreement could not be reached about whose bust should adorn the monument: both William Morton and Charles Jackson claimed the honor.
Oliver Wendell Holmes finally proposed a simple solution: Put busts of both men on the monument, with the inscription “To Ether.”

  • Depersonalization disorder is an odd psychological quirk in which sufferers feel detached from reality, as if they're watching someone else living their life. It's estimated that at one time or another, three out of four people experience the disorder, which typically dissipates and vanishes without treatment, though a persistent condition may require psychotherapy or medication.
