As many as 40 million Americans are reportedly too afraid to visit a dentist.

Odontophobia is a recognized syndrome in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Several centuries ago, it would have been common sense.

Why? Well, consider in ancient Egypt, if a tooth or your gums ached, the remedy was to suck on a dead mouse. You could mash the mouse into a paste and apply accordingly.

The English in Elizabethan times believed that warts could be removed by applying a mouse split in half and that eating fried rodents cured smallpox, whooping cough, measles and bed-wetting.
