Dog do's and don'ts

No matter how you dress your dog, the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council wants to enlighten you as to the proper way in which to consume it.

In 1995, the council established a few rules of hot dog etiquette.

1. First and foremost, always dress the dog, not the bun. Do not disgrace your family name by placing cheese or toppings on the bun and then adding the dog. Wet condiments like mustard and chili should be applied first, followed by chunky condiments like relish, onions and sauerkraut, followed by shredded cheese, followed by spices such as celery salt or pepper.

2. No ketchup for anyone over the age of 18. Ketchup is for hamburgers, and once you have reached a certain station in life, it is nigh impossible to live down the humiliation of being caught swabbing your dog with the red stuff.

3. Don't take more than five bites to eat a hot dog. Seven bites are permissible for foot-long wieners.

4. Do serve sesame seed, poppy seed and plain buns with hot dogs. Sun-dried tomato buns or basil buns are just plain wrong.

5. Don't use a cloth napkin to wipe your mouth. Paper is preferable. Ditto paper plates rather than china and your own two paws instead of utensils.

6. Condiments remaining on the fingers after a hot dog is eaten should be licked away, not washed.
