What is the real price of a bit of safety?

November 20, 2006

"It is wonderful to know that there are still some people with common sense left in this world, or as you put it, 'readers who can THINK.' I think it is a sad time in this country when we ban books and suppress the imagination of our

adolescent population. Need I point out that this is just the sort of tyranny that 'Fahrenheit 451' is talking about. Ironic that Alton Verm is pushing to get the book banned from their schools. My son read this book just last year, and I received an excellent commentary from him at the dinner table about its content. I am going to the library yet today to check it out and read it myself. As we give up our small freedoms voluntarily, we are slowly becoming more and more like the society that Bradbury talks about. It's happening right under our noses, and we are doing it to ourselves! Without inspiring our children and letting them become great thinkers, they will be that much easier to control when it comes time for them to take the reigns of society. In the meantime, why don't we also let the schools teach our children that self defense is for idiots and that this is the land of the free. Oh wait, they are already teaching our children this. Oops, no need to vote on that one! Parents, do yourself a favor and take your children's education into your own hands. Don't let them become society's robots."
