Comedy Face Masks

 

Waldorf-Astoria Red Velvet Cake

Makes 1 cake

Cake

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1-1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon butter flavoring
  • 3 level tablespoons cocoa
  • 1-1/2 ounces red food color
  • 2-1/2 cups sifted cake flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar

FROSTING

  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon butter flavoring

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

To prepare cake, in a mixing bowl, cream together shortening, sugar, eggs, vanilla and butter flavoring.

In a small bowl, make a paste of cocoa and food coloring, and add it to the first mixture. Combine the flour and salt. Alternately add the flour mixture and the buttermilk to the shortening mixture. In a small bowl, mix together soda and vinegar; add to batter. Blend.

Bake in three 9-or 10-inch pans for 20 to 25 minutes. Let cool completely.

To prepare frosting: In a saucepan, cook milk, flour and salt until thick, stirring constantly. Let cool. In a small bowl, cream together shortening and sugar very well; add vanilla and butter flavoring. Combine shortening mixture with milk mixture; beat well. Use frosting to frost cake layers and top and sides of assembled cake.
