Raspberries

Red raspberries are the tiny jewels of the produce department. The 49er gold miners of California aptly named these beautiful red berries thimble berries because when picked, the berry pulls off the cap, leaving a hollow like the inside of a thimble.

Raspberries signify summer. When the summer heats up, that's peak harvest time for these berries.

Two things to remember: First, buy raspberries just before you need them. They should be eaten within two to three days. Eat overripe berries within 24 hours.

Second, wash raspberries just before you use them. When you get them home, toss out any moldy or “melting” berries. Return the other berries to the original container or arrange them, unwashed, in a shallow pan lined with paper towels. You can top them with a paper towel to absorb any additional moisture.

About 75 percent of the fresh raspberries sold in the United States are harvested in California. The rest come from Oregon and Washington.
