The McElroy Manhattan

Makes 1 serving

• 1 1/2 shots bourbon
• 1/2 shot sweet vermouth
• 1 maraschino cherry
• 1 or more drops maraschino syrup
• 1 or more drops Angostura bitters

 

 

 

Pour the whiskey and sweet vermouth in a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled martini glass. Place a maraschino cherry in the glass. Drip 1 or 2 drops of syrup from the cherry jar over the drink but do not stir. Drip 1 or 2 drops of bitters over the top and again do not stir.

Serve immediately.

Note: McElroy's actual directions are far more poetic: “As you might with a glass of wine, hold it up and watch the light refract in the amber color and, before you take a sip, add the touch of bitters and watch the drops dance upon the golden surface.”
