Mkele Mbembe returned to his native Kenya

In 1986, Mkele Mbembe returned to his native Kenya for a vacation after graduating from Northwestern University Medical School. On a safari, while hiking through the bush he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg in the air.

The elephant seemed distressed so approaching it very carefully, Mbembe discovered a large piece of wood deeply imbedded in the lifted foot. It was bleeding badly. Utilizing his medical knowledge and working as gently and carefully as he could, he used his hunting knife to work out the imbedded chunk, after which the elephant gingerly put its foot down on the ground.

The elephant turned to face the man and with a curious look on its face, stared at him intently. Mbembe was almost certain he was about to be stomped to death. But after a moment the elephant trumpeted loudly, then turned and walked away. For as long as he would live, Mbembe would never forget that moment.

Twenty years later, Mbembe was visiting the Chicago Zoo with his teenage son. As he and Tapu stood outside the moat protecting the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures, a huge bull, walked as close to the moat as possible, stared at Mbembe, and lifted its foot off the ground and put it back down.

The elephant did this several times, then trumpeted loudly, staring at the man the whole time.

Remembering 1986, Mbembe thought, "Could it possibly be?"

So looking around to make sure no security personnel were in sight, Mbembe summoned up all his courage, scrambled down the moat and up into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared at him in wonder.

The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Mbembe's legs. lifted him high, and slammed him into the enclosure wall with such force that he suffered two broken legs, several cracked ribs, a dislocated shoulder, severe lacerations, and a skull fracture.

Probably not the same elephant.
