How much should I weigh for my height? Is 145 pounds a healthy weight if I am 5 foot 7? These are common questions in the health industry that can be answered by the Body Mass Index (BMI). According to the American College of Sports Medicine guidelines for exercise testing and prescription, the BMI assesses weight in relation to height and is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in meters squared. I have found that most people are unfamiliar with metric measurements, therefore, the BMI calculator located at the bottom of this page is designed to utilize your weight in pounds and your height in inches. Follow the directions below to calculate your BMI.

Several population studies have shown the BMI to be a relatively good indicator of total body composition and a valid predictor of health outcomes. The panel on Energy, Obesity, and Body Weight Standards has recommended the following BMI values:

  • 20-24.9-Desirable range for adult men and women
  • 25-29.9-Grade 1 Obesity
  • 30-40-Grade 2 Obesity
  • >40-Grade 3 Obesity (Morbid Obesity)
Obesity related health risks begin in the 25-30 BMI range

1. Enter your height in inches: (example: 5' 10-1/2" = 70.5)
