Area Measurement Conversions

This table provides conversions between various units of two-dimensional area measurement. Most of the units shown are collectively known as "English" units of measurements, which are still widely used in the United States and a few other countries.

How to use the table

Locate the unit of measure that you want to convert from along the top of the chart. Then look down that column until you reach the row of the unit of measure that you wish to convert to. The number at the intersection of column and row is the conversion multiplier.

For example, if you know that an area of land is 8 acres in size and you want to convert that value into square feet, look down the "acre" column until you find "square foot" row, where you will find the value 43,560. Multiply 8 by 43,560 and you will find that 8 acres contain 348,380 square feet. Conversions between English and Metric values are performed in the same way.

In the table, English to English conversions are shown in Orange. Metric to Metric conversions are shown in Green. Conversions between English and Metric systems are shown in White.

Notes:

  • The "Acres" measurement is typically used only to describe the size of a parcel of land and is normally not used to describe the area within structures. A related volume measurement is known as "Acre foot", which is used to measure large volumes of water, such as the amount of water held in a lake.
  • In countries where the English measurement system is primarily used, and someone speaks of an amount of space in building being measured "by the Square", they are talking about measuring space by the Square Foot. Roofing installers also measure the amount of shingles that a roof requires in "Squares", but a roofing Square is 100 square feet, which requires approximately three bundles of shingles to cover.
  • Fractional measurements are shown with at least five digits of precision and most are shown in scientific notation to allow the table to be narrow enough to be printed on a single page. Additional digits of precision can be obtained if needed by locating the reverse conversion (such as Acre to Square Inch instead of Square Inch to Acre) and taking the reciprocal of that value.
  • Although there are additional metric units of area measurements, this table only lists a few since all the other metric units can be easily obtained using the following table.
  • The length of the side of a square-shaped area can be obtained by taking the square root of the value. For example a Square Rod contains 272.25 Square Feet. Taking the square root of 272.25 is 16.5 feet. The length of a Rod measurement is 16.5 feet.

Metric Translation

All metric measurement units are directly convertible between one another by dividing or multiplying by the values shown below.

Square Centimeter
(cm² or sq cm)
Square Meter or Centare
(m² or sq m or ca)
Are
(a)
Hectare
(ha)
Square Kilometer
(km² or sq km)

(1.0e0)
100
(1.0e2)
10,000
(1.0e4)
1,000,000
(1.0e6)

For example, if an area is known to be 17.0 Square Kilometers in size, it is also 1,700 Hectares and 17,000,000 Square Meters in size. Similarly, an area that is 340,000 Square Meters in size is also 34 Hectares or 0.340 Square Kilometers in size.
