Question

How to float an ice cube in the center of a glass of water

Normally, when you put an ice cube in a glass of water, it will migrate to the edge of the glass.

How do you make the ice cube float near the center of the glass?

Answer

Because of water tension, water at the edge of a glass will climb slightly up the inner side. This means the water level is higher around the edge. Since ice cubes float, they invariably move to the highest point – at the edge.

However, water tension also allows you to overfill a glass just above the rim. If you do so, then the highest point is in the center of the glass, and that's where the cube will go.
