10 Tips for getting organized at work

February 18, 2008

Organization expert Leslie Jacobs gave entrepreneur.com these tips for organizing your work life:

  1. Clean, organize and purge your desk. Update your files and organize them by colors. Never put the word “Misc.” on any file.
  2. Be like Santa every day of the week: Make a list and check it twice. There's nothing more satisfying than checking things off your “to do” list.

  3. Use only one calendar. Choose the type that works best for you, whether it's on your computer, a PDA or a paper one on your desk. And then stick to that one for keeping track of everything.
  4. Make a note on your calendar one week ahead of any important event, about what you need to do as preparation. That will help you stay on top of your tasks.
  5. Make a list of your goals. Write down at least 10 goals you want to accomplish in your lifetime. Be specific.
  6. Choose one or two goals that you want to accomplish this year at work. Determine what it would take to accomplish each goal. Write that down and keep it by your bedside, to read every night and morning.
  7. Get rid of any office supplies you haven't used for the past year. The less clutter in your life, the happier you will be.
  8. Start planning now for the 2008 tax year. Label a box “2008 Taxes,” and put it in your office. This box will hold all your tax-related documents throughout the year, including bank statements and receipts.
  9. Update your Rolodex. Clear out any cards of people whom you haven't contacted over the past year. If you feel you must keep some information, create one folder for the “maybe I'll call him/her one of these days” numbers.
