Anti-Semitic 'Protocols' text in print worldwide

WASHINGTON – A century-old anti-Semitic tract, “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” has resurfaced in places as disparate as Japan and the Middle East, according to a museum exhibit that opened yesterday.

Repeatedly exposed as a fraud, the “Protocols” was first published in 1905 in czarist Russia to foment anti-Jewish violence and has been an effective propaganda tool since then, said Daniel Greene, a curator at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.

“It purports to be the secret minutes of the meetings of the learned elders of Zion, a secret group of Jews that actually never existed,” Greene said before the opening of the exhibit, “A Dangerous Lie: The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.”

The 24 protocols, or chapters, of the original 100-page book outline fictitious plans “to manipulate the economy, to control the media, to foster religious hatred and ultimately to enthrone a Jewish king of the world,” Greene said.

Each time the “Protocols” has come to prominence in the past, journalists and scholars managed to quickly debunk it as clumsy plagiarism based on an obscure, anti-Napoleonic rant by Maurice Joly from 1864 titled “Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu.”

Nevertheless, the work has ridden waves of popularity starting after the 1917 Russian Revolution and continuing during the rise of Nazism in Germany. Widely translated, the “Protocols” is a mainstream text in the Arab and Islamic world.

The exhibit shows modern printed versions in Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, German and English, among others. Many feature cover art showing the putative threat as a bloody, human-headed snake encircling the world.

A 2004 Japanese edition pictures the menace as a skullcapped vulture, while a 2005 Syrian text shows a dark-eyed, white-bearded man holding the world in his hands.

The Syrian version blames the Sept. 11, 2001, hijack attacks on the Jewish conspiracy. “It says that it's obviously in Jewish interests for America to have invaded Iraq, and so the Jews orchestrated the attacks of Sept. 11,” Greene said.

There is much controversy over the legitimacy of the "Protocols" published below. Please do not take them as the TRUTH, but verify for yourself if they correspond to actual reality.

Recently, La Voz de Aztlan published the editorial: "La Raza and Jews on Collision Course in Alta California". The editorial generated significant controversy and the usual barrage of hate e-mail from many sources. One troublesome message came from a Frank Quevedo, Vice President of Southern California Edison and another from a Thomas Saenz who identified himself as the National Counsel for the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Education Fund. Frank Quevedo is or was a Member of the Board of MALDEF and his corporation provides funds for its operation. The message was strongly worded and requested that we "STOP" discussing the subject and to apologize to the Jewish community for what we wrote.

Since the publication of the editorial, we also received a message from a Neal Tabachnick, a Jewish Attorney with the law firm of Irell & Manella of Century City and Newport Beach. Irell & Manella also provides significant funds to MALDEF. In addition, our computer firewall detected six attempted intrusions and attempted remote connections through a SubSeven trojan program.

These incidents have not intimidated us from exercising our right to freedom of expression. It is with this spirit that we are publishing the controversial "Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion" for your review and analysis. We ask that you read the "Protocols" and determine for yourselves whether they are legitimate or not. We ask that you study them carefully in order to be educated and informed. Do political and economic events around the world conform to what the "Protocols" set out to do? You judge for yourselves.
