NETWORK PRINTERS Network
printer installations using TC/PIP ports or chosen from the network list
are user-specific and will not show up for new users. Instead install the
printers as local printers on LPT1:. When finished with the installation
open the printer driver, properties, ports and add a LOCAL PORT but type
in the server name and shared printer as \\BL-SERVER\PRINTERNAME. XP
should recognize this as a local printer for new users.
ACROBAT DISTILLER
5.0 Open Distiller, change preferences and Job Options as
needed; save to "ebook(1).joboptions." When finished delete the
"ebook.joboptions" file and rename "ebook(1).joboptions" to
"ebook.joboptions" which should make your changed settings the default for
all users.
INTERNET EXPLORER Open IE and
use Tools, Internet Options, Temporary Internet Files, Settings and change
the "amount of disk space to use" to "1 MB" or something small. The
default is 10% of the disk capacity which means that machines with
multiple users, like 10 users, for instance, will use 100% of the drive
for temporary internet files. This setting is not global, but is for each
user, but this way it is made global by incorporating the change into the
Default user setting which affects all new users. I haven't found a way to
retroactively change this setting for current users except by having each
user change it individually.
DOCUMENTS AND
SETTINGS In order to keep configuration changes to the desktop,
Start Menu, taskbar, Windows Explorer folders settings, Performance
settings (such as removing fading, animation, shadows, etc), when a new
user logs on:
- make all of the changes desired under one username (with admin
rights).
- log in as a different administrator
- delete the “Default User” folder in Documents and Settings
- copy the desired user configuration folder and rename it to Default
User.
This saves some settings that don’t get saved by
copying the subfolders into the Default User folder.
WORDPERFECT 8 and
9 WP 8 or 9's default document folder setting will not accept
the %userprofile% or %username% variables or use the My Documents folder
(C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents) without hard coding the
user name, which means on a multi-user machine the default file location
will have to be set manually for each user (to keep saved files) or left
at the default of C:\MyFiles which can be either cleaned out during a
logout procedure or left there depending on the computer's function.
While trying to configure the default file location WP
8 (sp5) froze up. The first time I de-installed it and re-installed it.
The second time I de-installed it and installed WP 9.
REGISTRY SETTINGS to turn off Master Browser
List As more and more workstations have the ability to become a
master browser, the possibility of browser elections unnecessarily
consuming network bandwidth seems to point to the advisability of turning
this feature off in all but a few computers, probably servers that are on
continuously.
Using Regedt32 in XP or 2000 Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Key: SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters\ Name: MaintainServerList
Type: REG_SZ Value: No - computer can not host a browser server.
Preferred setting for heavily used servers and most NT workstations. If
you set it to NO, you need to disable the Browser service or you will get
a error because the service can not start. The service is only used to
maintain a browse list, it has nothing to do with whether you can browse
the network.
Value: Yes -
computer will serve as a browser server. Upon startup, this computer
attempts to contact the master browser to get a current browse list. If
the master browser cannot be found, the computer will force a browser
election. This computer will either be elected master browser or become a
backup browser. Yes is the default value for Windows NT Server. You
usually have BDCs set to this value.
Value: Auto -
computer, referred to as a potential browser, may or may not become a
browser, depending on the number of currently active browsers. The master
browser notifies this computer whether or not it will become a backup
browser . Auto is the default value for computers running Windows NT
Workstation. I believe No is a better setting for most
networks.
