Take time to say thanks – in writing

A thank-you note is an easy gesture that means so much to the person who receives it.

But too often, thank-you notes are considered a chore, when the truth is that you don't have to write a novel – just a few simple thoughts tucked neatly in an envelope.

Here are a few hints to get you started:

First, greet the recipient, like “Dear Aunt Martha.”

Then express your gratitude, like “Thanks for the beautiful scarf.”

Follow with letting “Aunt Martha” know how you plan to use the gift. For instance, say, “It'll come in handy during the cold winter days ahead.”

It's also good to include a personal line to show interest in how the person is doing, such as “I hope your new job in Washington is going well.”

Last but not least, say thanks again and sign your name.

That's all there is to it.

The next time you receive a gift or someone has done something special for you, take a minute and write a quick thank-you to show how much you appreciate the person.
