Decoding Common Error Messages on the WWW

If you are unable to access a particular Website, it is likely due to one of the following reasons:

  • - You typed the URL (address) wrong.

  • - You didn't use the correct case (capital vs. non-capital letters) in the portion of the Web address AFTER the slash. For example, on my website I have all internal pages saved with names in lower case. Therefore...
    • Wrong = http://www.iteachyou.com/Class.htm
    • Right = http://www.iteachyou.com/class.htm
  • - You are no longer online.

  • - The Website is down or is too busy to accept additional visitors.

  • - The Web address is no longer valid.

  • - Your computer is "frozen" and needs to be restarted.

Understanding Error Messages that Appear When Trying to View a Webpage

  • 1. If Java is disabled, you will see Java error messages on websites that include Java.
    • - In Internet Explorer,
      click TOOLS-INTERNET OPTIONS-ADVANCED;
      scroll down to Microsoft VM category and place a checkmark by "Java logging enabled"
      and by "JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled."

    • - In Firefox, click TOOLS-OPTIONS;
      click Web Features;
      click to place a checkmark by "Enable Java."

    • - In Netscape,
      click EDIT-PREFERENCES-ADVANCED;
      check "Enable Java" and "Enable Java Script."

  • 2. Programs that block pop-up ads are a common reason why you may see an error message when trying to view a Webpage.

  • 3. If you see a Page Fault Error message, click Reload or Refresh to see if the Webpage loads properly; if not try again later.

  • 4. If you see a "page cannot be found" (or similar) error message, it may have appeared for numerous reasons, including the following:

    • - The page you want may have moved.
    • - You may have clicked or typed a Web address that contains an error.
    • - Your browser may have failed to connect to the remote Web server for this Web address.
