Claims West of the Ohio River

1784 - The state of Virginia relinquishes its western claims to land north of the Ohio River (based on its original sea-to-sea charter granted by King James I) to the Federal Government. Illinois is a part of the territory and it paves the way for passage of the Northwest Ordinance
